York was born in 1977 in Germany. In 2002 he finished his law studies in Jena, Thuringia and worked afterwards during six years in different commercial-, television- and German cinema-projects in light-departments, as a director of photography and still photographer.
Between 2006 and 2010 he studied cinematography in Dortmund, Germany and at the International
Film school in San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba and got his Master Degree in Visual Anthropology in 2014 in Ecuador.
As a cinematographer he worked for shortfilms such as “Musicbox” and “La tarea” that won prices in Germany (Lakino, Berlin, 2011), Argentina (First Price, Women in Focus, Buenos Aires, 2011), Cuba (Premio "El Almacén de la Imagen", Camagüey, 2010; Premio Cortometraje del Jurado de la Prensa Cubana, Festival de Cine Pobre Humberto Solás, Gibarra) and Portugal (Special Mention ESAP, Oporto, 2011). His first feature film “The Man Who Always Did His Part” was officially selected by Doculab 1.0 Costa Rica, Doculab 7, Guadalajara and Docs Barcelona+Medellín, to Pitching Documental at DocMontevideo, V. Workshop by Ibermedia in Guatemala in 2016, to Puerto Lab at the International Filmfestival in Cartagena, Colombia in 2017 and won the National Film Fund for post-production at the end of 2015.
Since 2013, York Neudel is a member of the selection committee of the Ecuadorian documentary-festival EDOC and since 2017 Head of Programming of EDOC. He also was a member of the jury of the First Festival of the House of Cultures in Quito and currently works as an assistant professor of cinematography at the University of America (UDLA) in Quito, Ecuador.
